Message to the European Parliament
René Repasi's draft report on EU Inc. is an important step, and we share its ambition: a company that is European by design.
But two choices in the text risk holding that ambition back.
Who it is for: The draft would exclude whole sectors and keep the form for "innovative" companies. A European company should be open to every business that wants it. Deciding who counts as "innovative" is the very fragmentation we are trying to leave behind.
How European it truly is: Too much is still left to 27 national laws. One Market deserves One Law, not one label stretched over twenty-seven regimes.
Get these two right, and EU Inc. becomes what the Letta and Draghi reports called for: the first building block of a genuine European Business Code.
To the Members now shaping this text: this is the moment to be ambitious!
